Delhi, the capital of India, is an important historical city.Ruled by several dynasties at different point of time, the city hasclosely observed the transition of history.Mentioned in several ancient texts and epics, it is believed that Delhi was home to an older settlement during 1000 B.C. Archeological excavations have proven these claims.During the middle ages, the city of Delhi, as we know it, was foundedby Qutb-ud-Din Aibak, the ruler of the Slave dynasty. During his reign, the famous QutbMinar ? a UNESCO World HeritageSite was commissioned. After the end of the Slave Dynasty, subsequent rulers came and developed the city in their own way.One of the biggest contributors towards the development of the city were the Mughals, especially Shah Jahan ? the fifth Mughal Ruler.He built the important landmarks of Old Delhi ? Red Fort (LalQuila),Jama Masjid and the ChandniChowk. However, he shifted his capital back toAgra after few subsequent years.After1638, Delhi once again became the political center of the Mughals. During the19th century, the British took over the cityand added it to the North-West Provinces of India. In 1911s, the capital of British ruled India was shifted to Delhi from then Calcutta. After 1947,Delhi became the national capital of theIndia.
